Darneal home sees renovations

Area home renovators have found themselves intrigued with the history of the house at 401 S. Camden Street. Bales Hogan Properties LLC owners Joseph (Joe) Bales and Jason Hogan accepted the large challenge of making the home – which was built by William H. Darneal (1849-1926) — where Darneal built his family’s home. “This was the first time I’ve taken on an older house,” said Joe. Although the original building was a church, a tornado in the 1860s tore it apart and Darneal purchased the land in March 1900. He hired men to tear the church down to its foundation. Darneal then hired Woodson Alnutt (1861-1933) to build a two-story home on top of the old church’s foundation. Joe explained his favorite part has been seeing how the home was built origi- nally in 1900 and looking at the original foundation. “The foundation is still in great shape.
