Chief cautions against leaving children in vehicles

In an effort to save the lives of area children, Richmond City Fire Chief Mark Sowder shared summer safety tips children being left in vehicles. The unfortunate truth is that accidents can happen quickly in the hot summer months. In 2022, there were 33 hot vehicle deaths reported in the U.S., with 10 deaths recorded so far this year. “Leaving a child unattended in a hot car poses great risks that can lead to tragic consequences,” said Sowder. On average, 38 children under the age of 15 die each year from heat stroke after being left in a vehicle. In both 2018 and 2019, a record number of 53 children died after being left in a hot vehicle, according to injuryfacts. nsc.org. “Every year, we hear heartbreaking stories of children suffering heat stroke or even losing their lives due to this unfortunate circumstance.
