Businesses ask for relief funds from county

RICHMOND – Businesses are applying for federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funds distributed to Ray County by the state. “There’s more and more (requests) coming,” Presiding Commissioner Bob King said. “We’ve allocated quite a bit.” From a $3-million pool, much of which went to schools, the county set aside $500,000 to give grants to small businesses hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike loans, grants are not repaid. County Treasurer Melissa Holloway said the commission allocated CARES Act funds to several business applicants. “The amount for small businesses (allocated so far) would be $195,000,” she said, or about 40% of the $500,000 available. “I’m really happy with the amount they’re putting out to the small businesses. That’s awesome that they’re able to help like that.” Some businesses have asked for up to $50,000, Holloway said.
