Bridge dedication to honor men killed at Pearl Harbor

RICHMOND – A bridge-naming procession will start at 3 p.m. June 5 to honor the memory of three Richmond-area residents killed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Highway 10 bridge over Missouri Highway 13 in Richmond will be named to honor brothers Eugene and Charley Skiles; and their cousin, Garold Skiles. The bridge procession will get under way at the Ray County Veterans Memorial Building at 312 Clark St., head through city streets to Route T, enter Highway 10 and from there travel east across the bridge, American Legion Senior Vice Commander Jim Richardson said Monday. The original plan called for an on-site dedication, but the Missouri Department of Transportation rejected doing so. “They would not allow gatherings on a state highway,” Richardson said. After the procession, celebrants will gather at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building for an open house, cake, coffee and a look at memorabilia.
