Berning celebrates 40 years of barbering

Richmond resident and barber Jerry Berning is celebrating 40 years of barbering today from 3-5 p.m. at New Concepts, located at 306 Wollard Blvd. in Richmond. Well known for his haircuts and the infamous caricature drawing he displays in his shop, Berning spent nine months in school learning the art of barbering. “I’m so grateful for this community,” said Jerry, who married life-long Ray County resident Marianne Seward in 1964. “My dad, Carl Seward, was a bee farmer. At one point he had a couple of hundred beehives. He was known as the honey man,” she said. “Jerry grew up in Norborne, and we met in Lexington at a Krazy Kats Dance in ‘63. Every Saturday night they had performances at the auditorium in Lexington. Back in the ‘60s, it is what kids did.” When the duo married, Jerry worked for Continental Airlines. “It’s a pretty long shift,” Marianne said.
