Watson turns to Behler, Hays for track coaching tips
Andrew Watson doesn’t have to look far to find mentors to guide him through his first stint as a head varsity track and field coach.
Watson is Hardin-Central’s new coach. He succeeds Brent Behler, who led the Bulldogs for one season following Kirk Thacker’s departure. Watson was Behler’s assistant coach last season.
“Coach Behler’s a really good coach. … He had a lot of knowledge, especially in the hurdles and sprints and stuff,” Watson said March 2 in the Hardin-Central gym. “And luckily, he’s still in the building, so I can go pick his brain.”
Behler teaches physical education at Hardin-Central. He also coaches varsity boys and girls basketball.
In addition, Watson can consult with former Hardin-Central coach Dean Hays, who still teaches math there and is “down the hallway” from him, he said. Hays’ achievements included two state boys championships – the 1980 Class 1Atitle and the 2015 Class 1 title.
