Spartans get change for second scrimmage week

Richmond varsity football coach Nick Persell and his Spartans had a change of format for this week’s 7-on-7 scrimmages at Excelsior Springs. And Persell, for one, was a fan of the change. When the Spartans participated in the first week of the three-week series of scrimmages on June 13 at Tiger Stadium, five schools attended. Thus, offenses rotated in and out against defenses every few plays. On Tuesday, however, there were four schools – Kearney, Lawson, Richmond and the host. Instead of the rotation system, “more of a drive setting” system was used, Persell said, with schools going head to head. Under the drive format, teams were paired up, with each receiving three possessions. The possessions started at the 40-yard line. And as Persell explained, each team had eight plays – four to gain 20 yards for a first down, another four to score a touchdown. Like the previous week, only pass plays were allowed, there were no helmets or pads and tackles were made by touching the receiver. …
