Orrick boys win home thriller
Orrick and Carrollton slugged it out, metaphorically speaking, when the schools met Tuesday night at Orrick in varsity boys basketball.
Orrick won the fight 52-51. And senior Tucker Greer delivered what proved to be the knockout punch.
With the score knotted at 51, Greer sank one of two free throws with 5.2 seconds left in the final quarter. An attempt by Carrollton to win it with a three-point, buzzer-beating shot fell short.
The Bearcats punched above their weight in getting the non-conference victory. Orrick is a Class 1 school. Carrollton is a Class 3 school in basketball.
Greer’s clutch free throw and Carrollton’s desperation trey attempt capped a seesaw affair. The Bearcats trailed 14-12 after one quarter, but were up 26-24 at halftime.
The Trojans edged the Bearcats 16-13 the third quarter to help set the stage for the down-to-the-wire finish.
The boys game capped a varsity doubleheader with Carrollton. Orrick lost the girls game 53-4.
