Huskers prove Spartans ‘not unbeatable’
RICHMOND – Varsity football coach Nick Persell wanted his Spartans to learn one big lesson from their 35-26 Sept. 24 homecoming loss to Lafayette County of Higginsville.
“We’re not unbeatable,” Persell said.
Other lessons Persell hoped the Spartans learned from their first loss this season included that each play is important.
“Every tackle that you make matters.
… Every block that you make matters.
… A lot of times … (you’re) just one play away from changing the game drastically and, well, we didn’t make enough of them today,” he said.
Junior Aidan Ivison and senior Tadan McCoy found more lessons during the Missouri River Valley Conference East Division opener. The Spartans need to respond with “a good week of practice and prepare better,” not get swelled egos and see the big picture, McCoy said.
“We just can’t let one loss define our season,” he said.
The loss taught the Spartans they “need to be humble” yet stay positive, Ivison said.
