Former coaches guide Persell as Richmond’s new skipper

RICHMOND – Nick Persell finds inspiration in coaches who mentored him as he guides Richmond’s baseball program. Doubling as Richmond’s varsity football coach, Persell became head coach in 2020. He succeeds Brandon Quick, for whom he served as an assistant from 2015 to 2019. Quick also coached Persell in high school. “Coach Quick has been the baseball coach here for a long time and (I am) excited to kind of take over that program and, hopefully, kind of get it back to … some winning ways. … We’ve struggled the last few years,” Persell said in January for “Ray County Voices,” this newspaper’s podcast series. Working for Quick helped prepare Persell to take the helm, Persell said last July while wearing his football coaching cap. “Somebody with that much experience, that certainly pays off a lot when you’ve worked for them for a few years,” he said.
