Following rule changes is new year’s resolution

I’ve made a journalism-related new year’s resolution: to try to stay on top of rule changes in prep sports. The beginning of this high school winter sports season inspired my resolution. I was covering a Hardin-Central varsity girls-boys home basketball doubleheader around Thanksgiving, maybe early December. While watching the scoreboard, I noticed something odd. O.K., odd for high school basketball. I recall both teams being charged with a few fouls in the first or third quarter. I expected those fouls to carry over to the following quarter. They didn’t. I suspected that high school basketball had adopted a rule that has been part of international basketball for several years. In international basketball, a team enters the bonus when the opposing team has been charged with its fifth foul in a quarter. Let’s say the United States is playing in the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
