’Cats bring back old-school defensive drill for summer sessions

Orrick varsity 8-man football coach Matt O’Dell brought back an old drill Monday as he and his staff continued to prep the Bearcats for their 2025 season. To conclude the day’s activities, O’Dell had the Bearcats run through “the circle drill.” The drill works like this: A player lines up on defense. After hitting a blocking/tackling dummy, the defender must read if the quarterback intends to pass the ball downfield or lateral to the running back lined up behind the quarterback. If the quarterback laterals, the defender must pursue the ball-carrier. If the quarterback rears back to throw, he must circle around the running back, acting as a blocker, and get to the quarterback. O’Dell learned the drill when he played 11-man football at Orrick, he said. His head coach then was Pat Richard, who led the Bearcats to Class 1 state titles in 2007 and 2008.
