Veteran officer returns to police force

After nearly three years away from the badge, a familiar face has returned to the Richmond Police Department – and he’s bringing more than two decades of experience with him. Richmond Officer Todd Herdman first joined the department 26 years ago and rose through the ranks to the position of lieutenant before taking early retirement in 2022. Herdman refers to his return to the force as a deeply personal homecoming. “Walking into the police department after being gone for almost three years felt like I was returning home after a long absence,” he said. “I am very grateful to be back in Richmond.” Herdman’s law enforcement journey began with a family tradition. Inspired by relatives in the profession, he viewed policing as a way to help people and carry on a legacy of service. “I initially got into law enforcement because I had family members in law enforcement when I was young and I wanted to continue the legacy of helping people,” stated Herdman.
