Two runaway barges pass Ray County

Two runaway barges from Capital Sand Company of Independence made their way down the Missouri River last week. Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers said he received a call Thursday, Jan. 25, about “a handful of barges” loose. After more updates, he said there were two confirmed barges floating down the river. One passed in the morning and the other floated by at approximately 3 p.m., he said. “There wasn’t a lot of communication. We didn’t know how many would make their way past the county,” said Childers. “Deputy Brian Lackey was on the bridge when the second barge passed. We wanted to make sure it didn’t damage the bridge on Business 13 towards Lexington.” Childers said there is no way to stop a barge unless one gets stuck on their own. “With the fog, mist and ice on the water – it was interesting to find it floating past. The current was fast. We got plenty of rain that week,” said the sheriff. Capital Sand Company did not respond to repeated attempts of contact by Richmond News…
