RCSD working to break addiction cycle

Although the Ray County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Work Program has been “phenomenal,” Sheriff Scott Childers understands it’s a “double- edged sword” with county victims. The program, which began in late 2023, has been positive and there has not been one single issue to report, according to Sheriff Scott Childers. “I try to only let people in the program if I know they want to change. My job is not to judge them. My job is to help them become better and break the cycle of addiction. At times, being in jail can make people better criminals. I am trying to reform them and give them a future with these tools,” said Childers. Childers mentioned a story about a Ray County inmate who was let out and released on his recognizance (ROR).
