Pit bulls find new homes, careers in Ray County
The Ray County Sheriff’s Office has a new member on its team – Jinx, a 6-year-old pit bull.
The dog is part of the Ray County Sheriff’s Office’s K9 Unit. Jinx is partnered with Deputy Austin Crossland.
Crossland was certified to work with Jinx in early August. Although working with a dog is more challenging than it might appear, it is still “awesome” being paired with a partner all the time on the job, he said.
Jinx is Crossland’s first K9 partner. The dog came to Ray County from Colorado to work and train with Crossland.
Jinx is one of two dogs in the K9 unit. The other is Karma, a 3-year-old pit bull rescued from a dog-fighting house in California, assigned to Cpl. Matthew Cowan for tracking narcotics and people. Cowan has been paired with Karma for a little more than a year, he said.
“Austin and Jinx actually bonded a lot quicker than Karma and I did,” Cowan said.
