One-vote write-in candidates spark runoff for council seat

RICHMOND – A tie means a runoff election will take place for the Richmond City Council’s 1st Ward seat, Ray County Clerk Glenda Powell said Wednesday.

The candidates are Clay Mueller, Jim Hardison, Christopher Toego, Tom

Williams and Robert Duncan.

Each received a write-in vote in the April 5 election. The runoff election will take place June 7, Powell said.

“Vote for one for a one-year term for Ward One,” is what the ballot will advise, she said.

Only registered voters may hold public office and two might not be qualified to serve on the council, Powell said.

“There were five write-ins and, of those, two of them we cannot even find in our database as a registered voter,” she said, but the state advised putting all five names on the ballot.

Also because of a tie, there will be a runoff Richmond Board or Education election June 7, as reported previously.
