RICHMOND – Summer school has attracted a much larger group of students, more than 360, this year versus last, Superintendent Greg Darling said. “We have great results in summer school. Our summer school has doubled,” he said. Higher numbers may be attributed to changes in the district’s summer classes,” Darling said. “We did some different approaches,” he said. This year’s summer classes go beyond traditional coursework, such as skill development for mathematics and language arts, though both are taught, including by Sunrise Elementary School teacher Jamie Marrant. During her math class, Kyndal Johnson, 8; and Madison Clevenger, 7, sit next to each other while working on “Mental Math,” involving time, money and fractions. “What I really like is, this is not really like normal school, but it’s still like you’re learning,” Johnson said. “You can be in the same class with your friends, like I’m in class with Kyndal, who’s my cousin,” Clevenger said.
