Freefalling
Surrounded by family, friends and caregivers, Richmond resident Mark Johnson had the ride of a lifetime thanks to the “What if..” program at Shirkey Hospice and Palliative Care.
“Skydiving” was Johnson’s answer when was asked “If you had one more day to do whatever you want, what would it be?”
Johnson entered hospice in April after a nearly 24-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
His wish recently came true. “I have always loved to fly, it’s a sense of freedom,” said Johnson. In fact, he flew his first solo flight before he had his driver’s license. His message for others suffering from ALS is, “We’re going through this, take one day at a time and look what can happen.”
After arriving at the airport, he also found out his longtime friend and nurse Kathy List was going to take the jump with him.
“He is the strongest person I know,” said List. “He is an inspiration and everyone loves him.”
