Along with answering to Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s petition, Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers’ attorneys Kevin R. Corlew and Lydia R. McEvoy also filed a Motion to Dismiss. The attorney general quickly filed a response to the motion, stating the petition for quo warranto (used to challenge a person’s right to hold a public office) is appropriate. As in the court document, Childers will be referred to as “Respondent” and the Attorney General as “Relator.” In the introduction, attorneys state, “Faced with crowded prisons, mental health issues and high recidivism rates, corrections officials have developed inmate work programs, work release programs and other creative approaches that provide supervised work opportunities. Such programs have been found to benefit communities, improve mental and physical health of inmates, decrease violence and contraband in jails and provide inmates with skills necessary to reintegrate into society.” The motion states the Ray County jail is old…
