Challenging times demand clear school leadership

Declining student enrollment and dwindling financial resources at both the federal and state levels have put Missouri school districts in an uncomfortable position. Student achievement expectations continue to rise – driven by technology, assessments, schoolwide programs, classroom materials and mental health awareness – while resources to provide local support are depleting. Districts are facing teacher shortages and inadequate program funding, and many superintendents and school boards are wrestling with how school finance affects student performance. Attempting to navigate these choppy waters has led to tough conversations about priorities, staff compensation, expectations, classroom resources and facility planning. As public school leaders, our tenure is often defined by how we lead during difficult times.
