PREP to PRO High heat, drop kicks, random observations and points that amuse are all part of the wide, wide world of sports at the community and national levels. I still love hearing the rapid-fire clicks of a camera shutter.

School was in session in a sense Monday morning, when Richmond varsity football coach Nick Persell and his Spartans convened on the high school campus for the first day of a two-day, single-team camp. Before going to the practice field to drill, the Spartans studied video in the multipurpose building from recent multiteam camp sessions.

Like many other Americans, particularly Midwesterners, members of the Norborne Hardin-Central softball programs are making weather-related schedule adjustments this week. Originally, the Aggies were slated to hold team camp sessions 5-7 p.m.

August Hoeper had a different job assignment than usual on July 10, when Hardin-Central’s varsity girls basketball program participated in a dual practice with Orrick at Orrick High School. Normally, Hoeper is the head Hardin-Central varsity boys coach and assistant varsity girls coach.

Dantin McBee has a streak going at the Ray County Fair. McBee, a member of the Millville 4-H Club, received the Overall Best in Show Award for shooting sports July 13 at the county fairgrounds in Richmond.

Avis Rodenberg got a confidence boost July 10. Participating as part of Orrick’s varsity girls basketball program in a joint morning practice with Hardin-Central in the Orrick High School gym, Rodenberg became more self-assured in her passing and dribbling, she said.

Offense is a focal point for Richmond varsity football coach Nick Persell and his Spartans for their first set of team camp sessions. “We’re installing all of our base run game, some of our pass concepts as well,” Persell said moments after the opening session had ended Monday on the team’s practice field.
