Sanders wins second straight title

Elijah Sanders is leaving Richmond High School a champion. A two-time state boys wrestling champion, to be specific. Sanders, who’ll graduate in May, won the 165-pound title at the Class 2 state tournament, held Feb. 21-22 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia. In 2023, he won the Class 1 state title at 157, making him Richmond’s first back-to-back state champion since Brandon Simpson. During 2003-05, Simpson won three straight Class 1 titles – the first at 152, the next two at 160, Missouri State High School Activities Association records state. “It kind of hit me later – … the thought of it being the last one and all that – but … I realized (after my championship match) what I’d done and I was really excited, happy about it,” he recalled Monday at the multipurpose building on the high school campus.
