Times like these past weeks — when an escaped convict was on the loose from Ray County — I’ve never felt more like a real reporter. Listening to police scanners and arriving at the scene this past week has felt more like a fever dream. Sometimes, I romanticize the role of being a small-town reporter, making my role sound more glorified than it is. As an unbiased non-citizen of Ray County, it was a unique experience seeing the community come together in search of the fled criminal. The night before the escape, I was just thinking about how there wasn’t any breaking news for this week — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I just let the thought slip through. I checked Facebook the next morning and sure enough, there was an escape from the Ray County Jail and school was canceled. I did indeed feel like a true reporter, maybe one you’d see in an episode of “Bones” or “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” It all happened when my co-worker Miranda Jamison (“MJ”) and I were looking for a…
