BELL TOLLS FOR LEXINGTON
RICHMOND – Excited Richmond football players rushed to the end zone after the game and rang the Saluda Bell – their prize for winning the bi-county rivalry game against Lexington.
Some of the grinning players hoisted the bell attached to a cross pole while posing for the yearbook, and social media photos and video, following their 41-8 home win over the Minutemen. The bell is a replica from the Steamboat Saluda, which exploded and sank in 1852 while area residents rushed to the nearby Missouri River to help save lives.
“I’m super-proud of our guys. It’s the third year in a row this group’s won the bell. I’m excited for them,” coach Nick Persell said. “I know it means a lot to our seniors and all of our kids, and to our community, too. We’re proud to have the bell and keep it here.”
In addition to maintaining the bell three straight years and bragging rights in the rivalry, the Spartans scored an unexpected seven points through the uprights.
