HIGGINSVILLE – The Spartans lost their way during the second half of their 70-52 loss to Lafayette County of Higginsville in the varsity boys third-place game in the Husker Classic, Richmond coach Brent Behler and senior guard Nolan Quick agreed.

Richmond sophomore Izzy Jenkins sensed she had the upper hand for her final wrestling match at the Excelsior Springs High School Girls Tournament. After winning the first of her three round-robin matches by decision and the second by pin, Jenkins capped the night by facing Excelsior Springs’ Makayla Maring.

HIGGINSVILLE – Richmond’s March 8 meeting with Excelsior Springs was on the Spartans’ minds as they prepared to face the Tigers again Monday night in varsity girls basketball, according to Richmond coach Kaylee Vantrump.

With 5 minutes, 2 seconds left in Richmond’s Dec. 5 home opener with Winnetonka, senior Nolan Quick did something he’s often done during his varsity boys basketball career: He sank a threepoint shot.

High heat, drop kicks, random observations and points that amuse are all part of the wide, wide world of sports at the community and national levels. Prep girls wrestling has come so far in the past 20 years — or even within the past five years! I remember when I interviewed my first high school girls wrestler.

Richmond’s varsity boys wrestlers are picking up the pace in their march toward individual and team goals this week. The grapplers were scheduled to open the regular season with a dual Wednesday at Oak Grove.

Richmond’s varsity girls basketball squad will get its season underway this week, weather permitting. The girls were slated to kick off the season Monday against Lawson on the road.
