Surprises are best when they are undercover and unknown to those who will receive them. This girl knows because about a month ago, unbeknownst to me, my boss, General Manager Sharon Donat, and co-worker, graphic artist Karen Payne, entered my writing into a newspaper contest – and I won.

This past week marked Memorial Day across the nation. It marks a day to remember military personnel who died while in service.

Something I wasn’t prepared for in this field of work would perhaps be the small-town “limelight.” Although every single resident may not read the paper, I’m proud to say most county residents do.

Nearly 5,000 years ago, humans discovered the written language. Stemming discovery of hieroglyphs, cuneiform, and the roman alphabet had been shared. Throughout history people have learned the ways of communication through time and to each other. Writing is the way for another person to exact the meaning intended by the writer. Writing is something we are surrounded by, even in our modern high-tech world. We may change how we communicate, but the fact is, we still do.

Times like these past weeks — when an escaped convict was on the loose from Ray County — I’ve never felt more like a real reporter. Listening to police scanners and arriving at the scene this past week has felt more like a fever dream.

Podcasts have grown into a popular way to be entertained or educated. By definition, podcasts are digital audio files made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.
