January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, which is dedicated to raising awareness of human trafficking and educating individuals on how to stop this crime. The national awareness day was on Jan. 11. In January 2000, the United States made a commitment to fight human trafficking both domestically and abroad through the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000.

Parents, educators, caregivers and children are being warned of the dangers associated with online activity, as it may lead to the solicitation and enticement of a minor to engage in sexual acts, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Sextortion involves an offender coercing a minor to create and send sexually explicit images or videos. An adult offender receives sexually explicit material from the child, the victim is then commanded to send more material or have the compromising material released. . These offenders are seeking sexual gratification.
