ORRICK – Monday’s varsity 8-man football camp session gave Kirk Thacker, Orrick’s new coach, a sense of some issues he and his staff must address as the Bearcats prepare for the season. One of those issues is the team’s practice attitude.

NORBORNE – The start of this week’s camp proves to Norborne Hardin-Central lineman J.W. Doyle and varsity coach Andrew Watson that the Aggies have improved this summer.

I find myself needing to buy a pair of swimming goggles again. I swam semiregularly for several years, starting around the turn of the century/millennium, when my body started telling me I was no longer an adolescent, even though I displayed the emotional maturity of one.

ORRICK – Dylan Comstock achieved two rare feats last week. First, the recent Orrick High School graduate was the male 16-18 champion at the Missouri Junior Amateur Championship.

RICHMOND – Lincoln Ruggles’ two victories in the Dolphin Swim Team’s July 17 meet at Southview Pool mattered less to Dolphins coach Angie Pencook than the progress the youngster showed in winning one of them.

RICHMOND – Jett Shane is on a mission. Shane, the son of Ryan and Kristin Shane, has a goal to raise $10,000 for the Arthritis Foundation, he said.

RICHMOND – The Dolphin Swim Team nearly swept its relay races July 10 at Southview Pool. The Dolphins won 10 of 13 relays, including five of six medley relays, during their meet with Carrollton and Marshall.

Ray County needs its own multistage bicycle race. The Tour de France helped lead me to that epiphany.

GRAIN VALLEY – Perseverance helped Ray Countian Doug Brisbin get his third-place finish in the E-modified feature race July 3 at Valley Speedway. Running fourth late in the 20-lap race, hoping to pass Kansas City’s Mike Ryun, Brisbin tried multiple ways to overtake Ryun.
