Gogue pours in 40 as Spartans trounce Tigers
Something happened Tuesday at Richmond High School that sparked a probe into the school’s record books.
That night, Jack Gogue dropped in 40 points to lead the Richmond varsity boys to a 71-43 victory over Excelsior Springs. Gogue’s performance in the Spartans’ opener of the Richmond Winter Classic prompted this sports editor to ask Matt Habermehl, district activities director, to investigate who holds the school record for most points in a basketball game.
As of this writing, the answer was pending. What was certain, however, was that Gogue had scored a personal best. His previous career high had been 33 points.
Gogue sensed he would have a banner night around the time he made his first basket, he said.
“Early in the game, I got fouled and missed both free throws,” Gogue recalled. “I thought it was going to be a long game, and (then), we kind of got in a groove. We had a huge mismatch down low and my guards and (post players) Thomas ( Murphy) and Gabe ( Johnson), we all did our ……
