Suzanne Brightwell Suzanne Dolores “Dee” Brightwell of Orrick passed away July 17, 2026, at the University of Kansas Medical Center after a long struggle with leukemia. She was born April 11, 1950, in Springfield, Mo., to Charles and Helen Rose. She lived in the Kansas City metro area most of her life. Dee met Larry James Brightwell on a blind date in January 1969. Six months later, they were married – a decision that began a lifetime of partnership, laughter, devotion and faith.

Always the life of the party, Dee loved attending any activity that involved her family. She was known for arriving early, saving seats for everyone and making sure no one felt left out.

Family time was her favorite time. She believed the more of it, the better. She was most content when everyone in the family was present and included at the table.

She and Larry made hundreds of homemade pizzas over the years and were famous for bringing the most perfect brownies to every gathering.

Dee was up for anything – exploring new places, trying new things and embracing every adventure, as long as she was surrounded by her favorite people. Lovingly called “Red Grandma,” she told each of her grandchildren, “Love you forever” every time she saw them.

She and Larry spent several years leading a Sunday school class at Shirkey Leisure Acres (now Shirkey Nursing & Rehabilitation Center) in Richmond. In her retirement years, she found additional time to volunteer and develop friendships in the community.

Her warmth, enthusiasm and unwavering love will be missed by all who knew her.

Dee leaves behind Larry, her husband and best friend of 57 years; three children, Peter (Vicky), Jonathan (Michelle) and Aaron (Bridget); a sister, Mary (Stan) Arnold; and a brother, C. Mark (Gloria) Rose. She also is survived by six grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Michael (Linda) Rose; and sister, Rebecca Hazlett.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at The Thomas F. Eagleton Civic Center, 1015 W. Royle St., Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Blood Cancer United (formally the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society).
