True looks forward to ‘cool’ opportunity at Drake
For Richmond senior Delilah True, the new year means she’ll soon be a college athlete – in a sport she hadn’t planned to pursue.
As the Richmond News recently reported, True has signed with the rowing program at Drake University, an NCAA Division I private school based in Des Moines, Iowa. To the knowledge of Josh McCray, Richmond activities director, True is the first Richmond student to sign with a rowing program.
“It’s a pretty wild story, kind of, how Delilah got recruited for rowing,” McCray said Dec. 12, joined by True in his office. “I’ll let her tell that, if she wants.”
True’s “pretty wild story” started with her looking on an app as she considered schools where she could continue her volleyball career, she said.
“One day, this coach from a college we hadn’t even considered decided to contact me and asked if I would be interested in rowing, and told me to go up to the college to meet with him,” True recalled.
