Richmond girls ‘in good shape’ after Husker Classic
HIGGINSVILLE – Richmond coach Chad Snyder liked the state of his varsity girls basketball team through the first six games.
“We’re 3-3. … I don’t know when we won that third game last year, but it was way after Christmas,” Snyder said Dec. 10. “It may have been February. So we’re in good shape.”
Last season, win No. 3 came Jan. 26 in the Richmond Winter Classic – four days after win No. 2. The Spartans finished 5-17.
Had the Spartans had more time at the end of their 34-31 Dec. 10 loss to Excelsior Springs in the fifth-place game of the Husker Classic at Lafayette County of Higginsville, they might be 4-3 already this season.
With the Tigers leading by three and 16.2 seconds left, Richmond sophomore Sydney Appleberry rebounded a missed Excelsior Springs one-and-one free throw attempt. The Spartans zipped the ball down the floor and attempted a game-tying three-point shot. Richmond sophomore Laney Moyer grabbed the rebound and the Spartans called timeout with 3.4 seconds left.
