Richmond claims district team wrestling title
LATHROP – The Spartans deserved their Class 1 District 6 boys wrestling title, Richmond coach Cody Beck said.
“These district titles aren’t just given out. … They stepped up to the challenge and they’ve done everything we’ve asked them to. … Tough group of kids,” Beck said.
The Spartans claimed the title by amassing 207 points – 23.5 points more than runner-up Lawson. They also qualified every wrestler for the Sectional 3 Tournament, slated for Feb. 27 at Lafayette County High School in Higginsville, with five Spartans claiming individual titles: Cayden Morris, 106 pounds; Ricky Russ, 113; Conner Teat, 120; Elijah Sanders, 132; and Ryker Plymell, 195.
Teat’s championship run involved waiting. With only three wrestlers in his weight class, he drew back-to-back byes before pinning Lathrop’s Keaton Coots in 3 minutes, 49 seconds for the title.
“(I) felt pretty good going into that match and … I’m pretty happy with it,” he said.
