Richmond boys start late on hoops season
RICHMOND – Coach Kevin Jermain has found himself shorthanded during Richmond’s leadup to the varsity boys basketball season.
Upperclassmen such as seniors Keyshaun Elliott and Layne Cavanah, and junior Jack Gogue – who helped the Spartans reach the Class 4 state quarterfinals last season – were preoccupied with football during November. The trio and others helped the gridiron Spartans reach the Class 2 state semifinals.
As of Nov. 18, the Spartans had “10 freshmen and five other players” in practice, Jermain stated via email. Those other players included seniors Spencer Wolf and Trevon McDaniel, who returns to hoops after sitting out his junior season.
With the other varsity hoopsters away at football, Wolf has had “to find ways to push myself and get better,” he said Nov. 22.
Being one of only two seniors is “really different” to McDaniel because he is “used to being one of the smaller kids,” rather than being bigger than a bunch of underclassmen, he said. It has affected his and…
