Orrick girls bring improved numbers to new campaign
ORRICK – Zach McGill sees improvement in his second season as Orrick’s varsity girls basketball coach.
As of Nov. 8, 15 girls participated the program, an uptick from 2020-2021, when the Bearcats went 0-18, McGill said.
“We have a younger group that’s pretty athletic,” he said. “They’ve played the past few years in junior high and I think they’re excited about our future.”
Those younger girls include first-year high schoolers Anela Fletcher and Brooke Archibald, the daughter of district Superintendent Scott Archibald. The season could not arrive soon enough for Fletcher, who played volleyball this fall.
“When we were five games into volleyball, I was like, ‘You know, I’m really ready for basketball right now,’” she said.
Fletcher and Archibald agreed participating in a summer league at Crest Ridge helped make the Bearcats ready to start November practices. They learned to keep low and slide their feet on defense, Archibald said. Offensively, the learned to “slow down and, like,…
