New OHS skipper sees policy as plus for ‘Cats
Taylor Golden, Orrick’s new varsity softball coach, expects to benefit from a policy change this school year regarding athletics.
For the first time at Orrick, students may participate in dual sports during a season. Thus, some Bearcats who would normally run track or play softball this spring are doing both.
“I think it’s awesome that they are allowing dual … (sports) this year,” Golden said during a March 6 practice. “I think it has really helped our numbers.”
The team roster posted on the Missouri State High School Activities Association website has the overall number at 15.
Kirra Vaughn, a runner in track, is part of that total. With the policy change, the senior opted to try softball, too, she said.
Vaughn, an aspiring shortstop and relief pitcher, expects participating in two sports to affect her game reps “just because I’m not able to be here throughout the entire practice.” But she doesn’t feel overwhelmed from juggling two sports, she said.
