The game’s on? Meh, who cares?
My apathy as a sports fan is growing.
A few years ago, after decades of a sometimes passionate, sometimes apathetic, sometimes contemptuous relationship with Major League Baseball, I finally decided I no longer cared about that level of hardball. My apathy is such that I can’t remember the last time I looked for a game to follow. Even if fellow Richmond High School alumnus, current St. Louis Cardinals radio announcer and all-around nice man John Rooney were to mysteriously appear at my door and invite me to sit in the broadcast booth with him for a ballgame, I’d probably reply, “Why bother?”
Since then, my apathy has spread to the NFL – or at least certain NFL teams. Earlier this year, I became apathetic about the Kansas City Chiefs, whom I had followed (often passionately) for decades. Well, technically, I became indifferent toward them, as I stated in a few columns.
