Fourth-quarter momentum flips on Richmond girls in courtwarming loss

The fourth-quarter momentum shift that turned a two-point Richmond lead into a 58-45 Richmond loss to Holden Feb. 3 started with turnovers, according to Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump. During the final quarter of the courtwarming and Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC) East Division meeting, the Spartans shifted from protecting the ball and playing their style of hoops to playing Holden’s, Vantrump said. “We were making silly passes and we weren’t looking up the floor, and we weren’t just boxing out and just (not doing) fundamental things,” she said. Junior guard Sydney Appleberry agreed turnovers hurt the Spartans. “I think we were trying to force the ball somewhere – where it wasn’t going to go,” said Appleberry, who led Richmond in scoring with 17 total points, followed by first-year high schooler Genevieve Didier with 12.
