Parson’s no-mask position baffling

Gov. Mike Parson gave a baffling explanation for refusing to require everyone to wear face masks in public places. Following a meeting with area school administrators in Clay County, Parson took off his mask and, at a safe distance, held a brief press conference where a member of this newspaper’s staff asked why he had not issued a mask mandate. “What I have a problem with is mandating the masks statewide, because every county is different and this state’s so diverse,” Parson answered. He went on to say some Missouri counties may have only a few COVID-19 cases, so he should not require everyone in the state to wear masks. “You still have some counties out there that’s got five cases or less and nobody’s been hospitalized,” he said. Parson’s position is troubling.
