Newspaper pressures

Working at a newspaper has a unique type of pressure. The pressure is not in the way you may think entirely. When someone thinks of “workplace pressure,” they tend to think your boss is nagging at you. The newspaper pressure is much deeper than that for this writer. The newspaper is greater than the writers, staff, press and readers – it is history being written. All newspapers go into the historical archive. In hundreds of years, the words and events will be still-framed into the printed pages. There is a sense of responsibility to provide as much information in each story as possible. The pressure is this: People deserve to read a story without an agenda behind it, neutral and full of the life of the people who live in the county. In recent events, I am so grateful I have had citizens come up to me and tell me their thoughts in the newspaper. I have had people come into the news office and tell me the paper is “neutral” and “clear,” which I hope reflects the person I am. Doing a…
