The right to redress government is part of the U.S. Constitution and is practiced with vigor in Missouri, but some Republicans want to change that and are meeting opposition rightly from conservatives within their own party. Some lawmakers reject letting everyday people express dissatisfaction with Missouri lawmakers; gather signatures on petitions; have those petitions checked by the Secretary of State’s Office; and if the names check out, then the issue causing dissatisfaction goes on the ballot for a direct vote by the people. Some GOP lawmakers want a harder process, more signatures, because their agenda differs from the people’s agenda. Medicaid is an example. Lawmakers: • Did not like that everyday people got Medicaid expansion on the ballot; • Rejected that everyday people from all political parties – Republicans included – voted for expansion, because they needed help to afford health care; • Failed in court to prevent expansion funding because lawmakers could not…
