When I am out in public at events or shopping, I am often asked who I am voting for or what I think of a certain candidate. My answer is always the same, “I don’t talk about politics in public.” The reason for this decision is straightforward yet crucial. I aim to avoid any possibility of my personal opinions compromising the integrity of the newspaper. If, for example, I publicly express support for ‘Mrs. Smith’ and then later report on a negative incident involving her opponent, it could create an impression of bias in favor of the candidate I personally endorse. I am deeply interested in knowing about the individuals others are supporting and the reasons behind their choices. I believe that everyone’s viewpoints are important. I admire those who engage in respectful discussions about the issues that affect us all.
