How to be a Sunshine Law hero

Say you’re a citizen and you want to put in your first Sunshine Law request – which is necessary if you want to apply the Sunshine Law to local record keepers in the city or county. The most important way to request any form would be to submit it in writing or online. The goal of this column is to make everyone aware of the power they hold as citizens because everyone has a role in their local government. All information in this column regarding the Sunshine Law comes from “Missouri Sunshine Law: Open Meetings and Records Law” which was revised in July by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey. As a local journalist who is still learning new things about the laws every day, I encourage you to conduct your research and to be a student of the Sunshine Law. Any request can be to two entities: public and quasi-public governmental bodies.
