Controversy meets reality TV
The choice to cancel an entire season of The Bachelorette just days before its debut has attracted widespread attention, but the circumstances leading to it did not start with the show’s cancellation.
If you’re familiar with me, you know I keep up with reality television. It has always been a guilty pleasure, something simple to follow, discuss and, at times, hard to look away from. That is part of why this situation stood out.
ABC did not move forward with Season 22 of The Bachelorette after a 2023 video resurfaced showing lead Taylor Frankie Paul allegedly involved in a physical altercation with her ex, Dakota Mortensen. Reports from that incident also indicated a child was present and struck during the dispute. The video circulated widely online in the days leading up to the scheduled premiere, prompting the network to halt the season’s release.
