Suspicions that might arise in this election year – after another census resulted in yet another undercount of minorities – are understandable, even expected. Generally, black and Latino voters lean toward Democrats. When minorities are undercounted, and whites overcounted, Republicans can benefit, while minority representation can suffer. Federal funds for infrastructure in minority areas might suffer, too. After President Trump interfered in the 2020 census – he tried to rush results and to ask about the citizenship status, a question even the Republican-dominated Supreme Court rejected – people should be forgiven if they wonder whether Trump wanted to help his party at the expense of an honest population count. Those who desire an accurate count, however, should not view the results this time merely as a product of Trump’s unadulterated partisanship.
