Virginia Carter

Virginia Fern Carter, 89, of Richmond passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond. Virginia was born on Feb. 24, 1933, in Rayville, the daughter of Grover and Dora (Travillion) Phillips. She was united in marriage to Donald Ray Carter of Kansas City in 1981. He preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 2005. Survivors include: her daughter, Dora (Joe) Barlow of Blue Springs; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Becky (Gene) Campbell of Dogpatch, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 12 siblings.

Virginia was reared and educated in the area of her birth. Over the years, she worked as a nurse’s aide and a waitress, and cleaned offices in Kansas City. She was a housewife and homemaker, loving mother and grandmother. Virginia was an avid reader and enjoyed watching Westerns.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to your local veteran’s organization. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Per Virginia’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. A celebration of life event will be held at a later date. Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond is in charge of arrangements.
