Body

Rodney Alan Weary, 69, Gardner, Kansas, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2020, at his home.

Rodney was born on Oct. 27, 1950, in Henrietta, Missouri, to Franklin Grimm and Sarah Jane (Denning) Weary III. He was raised in Richmond, Missouri, and graduated from Richmond High School in 1968. After graduation, Rodney attended the University of Missouri-Columbia for two-and-a-half years, majoring in business and psychology. He quit college to start pursuing his business career. Keeping in line with the Weary family history of owning and operating businesses in the entertainment industry, including his grandfather’s silent picture house and his parents’ drive-in movie theater, he successfully built businesses in the cable TV and paging industries before turning to satellite TV. His biggest success was building one of the country’s largest DirectTV satellite television distributors, Golden Sky Systems, which he owned and operated as CEO. He ultimately sold his company to a competitor and was regarded as one of the most outstanding entrepreneurs in Kansas City.

Rodney also was a pilot and loved to fly. He enjoyed traveling and spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks with his family and friends. In his retirement, he enjoyed simply spending time with family and especially enjoyed gardening with his daughter, Jade.

Rodney was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his children, Franklin Grimm Weary V, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Jade Weary, Gardner, Kansas, and Tristan Alan Weary, Kissimmee, Florida; brother Franklin Grimm Weary IV, Houston, Texas; and grandchild, Marin Christopher.

Cremation with inurnment at a future date in Richmond Memory Gardens, Richmond, Missouri.
