Robert Bates

Robert A. Bates, 58, of Richmond passed away Thursday, July 9, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born Feb. 29, 1968, in Carrollton, the son of Albert “Leroy” and Patricia Ann (Stroud) Bates. He was united in marriage to Mindy Michelle Mullikin on March 13, 2014, in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives the home.

Additional survivors include his mother, Patricia Bates of Norborne; two daughters, Christina “CJ” Miller (LT) of Orrick and Patty Bates of Carrollton; and three stepchildren, Corissa Hamilton (Justin), Curtis Williams (Kaitlyn) and Clayton Williams, all of Richmond.

He also is survived by five grandchildren: Ariana Elliott, Mackenzie Elliott, Alythia Miller, Rhett Hamilton and Stetson Hamilton.

In addition, he is survived by his brother, Rick Bates of Norborne; sister, Lisa Rainey of Norborne; many beloved nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leroy Bates; and brother, Ralph “Doug” Bates.

Robert was raised in the area of Norborne and educated in Carrollton.

Throughout his career, Robert served in many supervisory roles, including 22 years at Henkel, and most recently, four years at Magna International in Excelsior Springs. He was a respected leader and mentor who believed in helping others succeed. Robert was dedicated to encouraging those around him to achieve both their professional and personal goals, always inspiring others to reach their greatest potential.

Outside of work, Robert found peace outdoors. He had a deep appreciation for wildlife and nature. He was an avid hunter with a passion for deer management. He spent countless hours in the woods, not only enjoying the sport he loved but also passing on his knowledge and respect for nature to the younger generation. Sharing his love of hunting and conservation with family and friends was one of his greatest joys.

Even though hunting was one of Robert’s greatest passions, nothing meant more to him than his family. He rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his grandchildren, whether they were playing T-ball, cheering on the sidelines, competing in football or participating in rodeo events. His unwavering support, encouraging words and proud smile could always be found in the stands.

Robert will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet strength and willingness to help anyone in need. He leaves behind a legacy of love, mentorship and dedication that will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.

A devoted husband, he was a loving father, cherished “Pawpaw” and loyal friend whose life was defined by hard work, generosity and an unwavering love for his family and the outdoors. He was truly one of a kind, and his memory will forever be treasured.

Visitation and memorial services will be held Saturday, July 18, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and the services to follow at 11. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
