Pauline Lee Hess, 93, of Richmond passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City.

Pauline was born Sept. 26, 1930, in South Portland, Maine, the daughter of George and Jenny (Kinghorn) Rankin.

She was first united in marriage to Ernest R. Rash of Camden in October 1949. He preceded her in death Pauline Hess

on March 26, 1981.

She was later united in marriage to David Hess of Ray County. He preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 2000.

Survivors include her son, Jim (Phyllis) Rash of Lee’s Summit; and three daughters, Cheryl (Ronnie) Karl of Richmond, Patty (Wade) Ruopp of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Sandy (Jeff) Warnell of Conrad, Iowa.

Other survivors include 17 grandchildren: Stacy (Dave) Schnapf, Michael (Amy) Rash, Sarah Rash, Amy (Dustyn) Dame, Lauren (Frank) Ruester, Jacob (Erica) Rash, Caitlin (Tandy) Hall, Jeana Ruopp, Brandy (Sean) Buell, Genessa (Zach) Ridout, Katie Warnell, Quincy (Eli) Mullen, Mackenzie (Jordan) Doud, Bailey Nash, Ronnie Karl, Ryan Karl and Whitney Karl. She also leaves behind 29 great-grandchildren, with two on the way; and a daughter-in-law, Marie Rash of Clinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Eugene Rash; brother, Perry Rankin; and grandson, Brandon Ruopp.

Pauline was a devout Christian and was a member of the Richmond Assembly of God Church. She loved playing the piano and being on the God Squad.

Pauline was a sociable person and cared dearly about her family, especially her grandkids. She always kept in touch with her family, even her extended family. Her favorite phrase to use was, “Whatevuh.”

Pauline appreciated receiving cards from those dear to her. She wished she could have returned to Maine to visit her extended family and friends, smell the sea air and see the lighthouses.

Pauline will be missed dearly by her family and friends. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Richmond Assembly of God Church. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with funeral services were scheduled for Monday, March 25, at the Richmond Assembly of God Church, with visitation to begin at 10 a.m., followed by the services at 11. Interment was to be in Cravens Cemetery, Camden.
